A friend recently heard a 'clunk' from beneath him on his SRAD. Instinctively he immediately stopped the engine. On further investigation it transpired the engine had no oil - gone- disappeared !

In order to understand its importance in the grand  scheme of things , we first need to ask
Why do we need  Oil in our engines ?

The oil in our engines serves several purposes
Get a room full of petrol heads and mention OIL..............its an emotive subject
.....................and one for which everyone has a belief and oppinion.

The most obvious is that it acts as a lubricant.

If an engine is operating correctly there will be almost
no metal to metal contact because everything
should be riding on a thin layer of oil.
Thirdly :Because the piston rings do not create a perfect seal some combustion by products will slip past the rings into the engine. This may be little particles of carbon. Remember, diamond is carbon that was combined under heat and pressure. So these little carbon particles can be quite damaging to your engine.  An important role of the oil is to suspend these particles until the oil filter can get them.

And Finally: Additives.......Petrol contains sulphur which may react with water and oxygen to make sulphuric acid. Because this is very damaging to the engine, the Oil  has additives called Buffers which neutralise acids.

As well as buffers the oil will have solvents added. These solvents will try to dissolve tars, waxes and substances which can build up internally  in order to clean the engine and keep it clean.

Sports bikes increase the size of the oil cooler giving up to 10% more oil cooling capacity
Secondly and equally as important:
Heat Reduction
Oil circulates and cools the engine parts.
Motorcycle transmissions are by their
very nature oil cooled .
Part of the oil function is to help with heat reduction from the internal friction and combustion process - the hot oil ends in the oil sump (which for that reason also has cooling fins)
Dry sump systems have the oil stored outside the engine (Harley Davidson) whereas a wet sump system has the oil in
the bottom of the engine (most motorcycles).
